West Coast IPA Challenge 2026

The 19th annual West Coast IPA Challenge runs on Friday 31 July, hosted by The Malthouse and Fork & Brewer. This is the big one on the Wellington beer calendar, and it is a Valley Brewer tradition to turn up in numbers.

The format is simple and has not changed in nineteen years: brewers make a new beer, and the only rule is that it has to embody the spirit of a West Coast IPA. This year 32 breweries from around the country are entered. Winners come from two directions at once, a panel of around 20 New Zealand beer judges plus the public vote from everyone drinking on the night, and the trophy is the golden gumboot.

The 2026 theme is “West Coast goes West End”, so expect the Malthouse to lean into it.

Why it is worth the trip if you brew: 32 interpretations of one loosely defined style, side by side, on one night. That is about the best calibration exercise available for anyone working on their own hop-forward beers. Pay attention to how differently each brewery reads “West Coast”, particularly bitterness balance and whether they have gone for the drier, older interpretation or something softer.

Go early. There were still queues outside the Malthouse before 8pm last year.
